Research

At Parque Pingüino Rey we develop a research project that contemplates internal and collaborative studies, making this king penguin community one the few colonies located in public/private areas, within this kind of research. This provides major biological information and about its relationship with the environment, which allow to assess trails and viewpoints, as well as managing a sustainable touristic activity that creates awareness about conservation of the flora and fauna surrounding us.

Colony monitoring is held on a daily basis, which is developed by Global Penguin Society collaborators since 2011-2013. Since 2014, the following researches have been held.

Internal Projects:

  • “Ecological Monitoring of the King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) in Bahía Inútil”
  • “Causes of Death of the King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) in Bahía Inútil”
  • “Isotopic Niches of the King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus)”

In these projects, the following are involved:

  • Claudia Godoy (Global Penguin Society, Parque Pingüino Rey, Chile)
  • Luis Muñoz (Global Penguin Society, Parque Pingüino Rey, Chile)

Collaborative Projects:

  • “Satellite tracking of King Penguins in Bahía Inútil, Strait of Magellan, Chile” Klemens Pütz (Antarctic Trust Research, Alemania), Julieta Pedrana (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas,  Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria, Argentina), Alejandro Simeone (Universidad Andrés Bello, Chile), Pablo García Borboroglu (Global Penguin Society, Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, Argentina)
  • “Evaluation of the reproductive behavior of the King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) in Bahía Inútil, Tierra del Fuego” Claudia Godoy (Global Penguin Society, Parque Pingüino Rey, Chile), Alejandro Kusch (Feather Link, Global Penguin Society, Chile)
  • “Health indicators of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) and King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus)” Ana María Ramírez (Universidad de Chile, Chile), Claudia Godoy (Global Penguin Society, Parque Pingüino Rey, Chile)
  • “Phylogeography, genetic flow and genetic structure of King Penguin Colonies” Juliana Vianna Pontificia (Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile), Celine Le Bohec (Lab BioSensib, Centre Scientifique de Monaco, Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert Curien, CNRS, France), Claudia Godoy (Global Penguin Society, Parque Pingüino Rey, Chile)

The development and logistics of these projects are mainly funded by King Penguin Park, and in some cases other collaborating institutions.

Some of the results of these research projects were presented at the Ninth International Penguin Congress, which was held in September 2016 in Cape Town, South Africa.
